SACON

Shock Absorbing Concrete

Shock Absorbing CONcrete (SACON) is a low-density, fiber-reinforced foamed concrete developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to be used in live fire military training facilities. It was developed to minimize the hazard of ricochets during urban combat training. As well as reducing ricochets, the shock absorbing properties of this foamed concrete also function to create a medium for capturing small-arms bullets. The captured bullets are chemically stabilized by the ingredients of the SACON concrete and the precast concrete block can eventually be disposed of as non-hazardous waste.

Brandt Group, Inc. is the only licensed SACON (Shock Absorbing CONcrete) contractor that pours its CONUS and Canadian bound product at a PCI (Precast Concrete Institute) certified facility that it controls. Brandt has in-house engineering and a full time California certified laboratory. This testing capability includes our own shoot/explosive range with .22/9mm NATO/.380 ACP/.38 S&W/.357 magnum/.38 Special +P/.40S&W/.45ACP/5.56 NATO/30-06/.30 carbine/7.62NATO/.303 British/7mm Mauser/7mm RemMag/.300 WSM/.300 blackout/.338 Lapua/.50 BMG and all shotgun rounds, including breaching rounds.

Although the casting of SACON has very tight temperature limitations, we can pour almost any time of the year in our indoor, temperature controlled environment. Others out-source the actual production to a local precast yard, which may or may not have the very specialized mixing and testing equipment required to insure the unique quality control standards that SACON requires. Our company trucks take 48,500 pounds of SACON anywhere in CONUS within three days. We use flat-racks for overwater shipment.

SACON is just one of our several specialized products that utilize our propriety casting slab racking system. We also use it for sling load training blocks, keel blocks and solar reflector ballasts. This system allows us to duplicate repetitive parts well within SACON required tolerance (1/8 inch/.125 inch/3mm within a 10 foot/3.04 m span). This uniformity is impossible using the less sophisticated forming systems of our competitors. We can make any shape or any size your project might require including duplicating catalogue sizes or actual as-built sizes pursuant to your existing project. Our replacement panels may be cast slightly undersized and/or reconfigured so that field replacement at existing facilities is expedited.

Unique in our field, Brandt is an experienced precast concrete specialist that got into the SACON business; we are not SACON wholesalers that outsource actual production and quality control. Our years of precast experience allow us to tailor our product to specialized circumstances, such as harsh marine environments that require epoxy coated or galvanized metal embedded parts. We offer installation options using our experienced in-house staff, operating as required under our California General Engineering (A), General Building (B) and Hazardous Materials (Haz) license number: 881954 (see www.cslb.ca.gov). We are registered under the federal SAM (System for Award Management). For California projects, we are certified DVBE (Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business) and for federal projects we are certified SDVOSB (Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business). We also have full time staff with federal security clearances.

Typical SACON Shop Drawings. Brandt produces details shop drawings for client approval before any production work begins. This allows the customer to produce replacement blocks at a later date and insure a proper fit.
